The Benefits Of Teeth Whitening

If you’re self-conscious about your smile because your teeth have been stained by tobacco use, drinking coffee and tea, or just natural aging and wear & tear, teeth whitening is right for you. Choosing teeth whitening at Oakbrook Dental has a variety of great benefits.

Restore your confidence

With teeth whitening from Oakbrook Dental, you won’t have to feel self-conscious about your smile or your teeth ever again. You can reverse years of stains, discoloration, and yellowing in as little as one appointment with Dr. Patel or Dr. Major.

Affordable for any budget

Teeth whitening is relatively inexpensive compared to other cosmetic treatments like veneers, but it can still completely transform your smile, making it a great option if you want to get cosmetic dental treatment on a budget.

Completely non-invasive

Teeth whitening doesn’t involve any kind of drilling needles, or surgery of any kind. It’s totally non-invasive and will not cause you any pain or discomfort. For that reason, it’s a great option for patients who are just beginning to explore the possibilities of cosmetic dentistry, or for people who may have dental anxiety.

Oakbrook Dental was such a great experience. When I first stepped foot into the office, Kim and Judy had a smile on their face and greeted me so kindly. I then met my dental assistant Laura who made me feel very relaxed and calm at my visit. She made sure I was comfortable throughout the whole appointment which I very much appreciate being as anxious as I am. I then met Dr. Patel who was amazing. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she does and she made me feel very comfortable as well. I would recommend OakBrook Dental to everyone I know! :)

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office teeth whitening is done by Dr. Patel or Dr. Major at our office in West Bend, and offers fast results that can completely transform your smile in just one appointment. This makes it great for anyone who wants fast results for a special occasion like a wedding, a photo shoot, or a business conference.

The process is simple. Dr. Patel or Dr. Major will clean your mouth, then apply a special compound to your gums to protect them from the whitener. Your cheeks and lips will also be retracted away from your teeth. Then, they will apply a powerful whitener to your teeth and activate it with a UV light.

After a few minutes, you’ll rinse away the whitener. Then, Dr. Major or Dr. Patel will check your results, and the process may be repeated several times until you reach your desired level of tooth brightness. Then, you’ll be sent home to enjoy your picture-perfect new smile.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

Take-home teeth whitening is an excellent choice for patients who may wish to avoid spending too much time in the dentist’s chair. In this method of whitening, you’ll use a set of custom whitening trays and professional-grade whitening products from Dr. Patel and Dr. Major to whiten your teeth.

To get started, you’ll come into our office, and you’ll be fitted for a set of custom, reusable whitening trays. These will be built by a dental lab, and sent to our office in a few weeks. Then, you’ll come to pick up your trays and whitening products.

After that, you’ll just follow the instructions provided to you by Dr. Major or Dr. Patel to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home using your trays and whitening products. Typically, the treatment will take about 2-3 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between in-office and take-home teeth whitening treatments?

When it comes to achieving a brighter smile, understanding the options available can help you make the best choice for your needs. At Oakbrook Dental, Dr. Patel and Dr. Major offer both in-office and take-home teeth whitening treatments, each with its own set of advantages.

In-office teeth whitening is a professional procedure performed at our West Bend location. This treatment is ideal for those seeking immediate results, as it can significantly whiten your teeth in just one session. The process involves applying a high-concentration bleaching gel to your teeth, which is activated by a special light. The entire procedure is closely monitored by our experienced dental team to ensure safety and effectiveness. In-office whitening is perfect for patients who want a quick and noticeable improvement, perhaps for a special occasion or simply to boost confidence.

On the other hand, take-home teeth whitening kits provide a more gradual approach to achieving a brighter smile. These kits include custom-fitted trays and professional-grade whitening gel, which you apply at home over a period of several days or weeks. While the results take longer to achieve compared to in-office treatments, take-home kits offer the convenience of whitening your teeth at your own pace. This option is great for those who prefer a more flexible schedule or who may have sensitive teeth, as the lower concentration of the gel can be less irritating.

Both methods are effective, but the choice depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle. Dr. Patel and Dr. Major can help you decide which option is best suited for you during a consultation.

Will whitening my teeth damage my enamel?

A common concern among patients considering teeth whitening is whether the process will harm their enamel. At Oakbrook Dental, we prioritize patient safety and oral health, and we want to assure you that, when done correctly, teeth whitening is a safe procedure that should not damage your enamel.

Enamel is the hard, outer layer of your teeth that protects them from decay and damage. Professional teeth whitening treatments, whether in-office or take-home, are designed to penetrate the enamel and break down stains without causing harm. The key to maintaining healthy enamel during whitening is to use products that are professionally approved and to follow the recommended guidelines.

It's important to note that while professional teeth whitening is safe, overuse or misuse of whitening products, particularly over-the-counter options, can lead to enamel erosion or tooth sensitivity. That's why it's crucial to consult with a dental professional like Dr. Patel or Dr. Major before beginning any whitening regimen. They can evaluate your dental health and recommend the best approach to achieve your desired results safely.

Is teeth whitening safe on crowns and fillings?

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic procedure, but it's essential to understand how it interacts with dental restorations such as crowns and fillings. At Oakbrook Dental, we ensure our patients are well-informed about how whitening treatments may affect their existing dental work.

Teeth whitening treatments are designed to lighten the natural tooth structure and do not have the same effect on crowns, fillings, or other dental restorations. This means that while your natural teeth may become several shades lighter, your crowns or fillings will remain the same color. As a result, there can be a noticeable difference in shade between your natural teeth and any restorations.

If you are considering teeth whitening and have crowns or fillings, it's important to discuss this with Dr. Patel or Dr. Major. They can help you plan your whitening treatment to achieve a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing result. In some cases, it may be necessary to replace older restorations to match the newly whitened teeth, ensuring a harmonious smile.

What should I do if I experience sensitivity after teeth whitening?

Sensitivity is a common side effect of teeth whitening, and while it is typically temporary, it can be uncomfortable. If you experience sensitivity after your whitening treatment, there are several steps you can take to alleviate the discomfort.

First, consider using a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain ingredients that help block the pathways that lead to the tooth's nerve, reducing sensitivity over time. Additionally, avoid consuming extremely hot or cold foods and beverages, as they can exacerbate sensitivity.

Another effective strategy is to use fluoride treatments or gels, which can help strengthen your enamel and reduce sensitivity. Dr. Patel or Dr. Major can recommend suitable products and provide guidance on how to use them effectively.

Finally, if sensitivity persists or becomes severe, it's important to contact Oakbrook Dental. Our team can assess your situation and provide further recommendations to ensure your comfort and oral health.
